Event Description

Skin to Win

Lung–burning fun for all at the Mammoth Caldera Burn – a ski mountaineering challenge. Starting from Canyon Lodge at Mammoth Mountain, participants will skin their way through five ascents on Mammoth Mountain to complete this battle against themselves and the terrain. Ski mountaineering (ski mo), a high-altitude up and down challenge imported from Europe, is rapidly becoming one of the hottest new winter sports in North America.

The Short Course is perfect for backcountry skiers of any skill level interested in learning new aspect of the sport. The Long Course is designed to showcase Mammoth's steep, technical skiing. 

Early Bird Registration $75 (available until March 21, 2025)
Advance Registration $85 (available until April 13, 2025)
Week-of Registration: $95 (April 14-18, 2025, no day-of registration available)

There will be walk-up registration available during bib pick-up (at Canyon Lodge) on Friday, April 18th from 4-7pm. There will be no walk-up or on-site registration on the morning of the race. Category changes must be made by the end of bib pick-up on Friday, no changes will be allowed the morning of the race.

Week-of Registration (available online) closes at 11:59pm PT on Friday, April 18th. There will be walk-up registration available during bib pick-up on Friday, April 18th from 4-7pm. There will be no walk-up or on-site registration on the morning of the race.

Bib pick-up will be from 4-7pm on Friday, April 18th at Canyon Lodge. There is a mandatory racer meeting at 6 pm during bib pick-up. If you are absolutely unable to pick-up your bib on Friday evening, please email raceadmin@mammothresorts.com to make other arrangements. There will be last-minute bib pick-up available on race day from 6:30 - 7 am. Any bibs not picked up by 7am on race day will be marked a DNS and unable to participate- no late starts.

All bibs will be checked at the Start area prior to the race start. Please plan to start lining up in the Start corral at 7:10 am. 

Course Descriptions & Links 

Long Course

4,800 gain and loss over 7 miles

  • The first ascent is from Canyon Lodge to the top of Ricochet. From the starting line ascend Schoolyard to Round Robin to Avalanche to Solitude to Roma's Road to the top of chair 9. 2,000 feet of gain over 2 miles.
  • The first descent is from the top of Dave's Glades to the bottom of Dragon Alley. From the top of Dave's Glades descend the ridge to Dragon's Back, take a left turn down the chute (Back #3) down the runout to Ricochet and Dragon Alley. 1,826 feet of loss over 1.1 miles.
  • The second ascent is from the bottom of Dragon Alley to the top of Dave's Run. Skin up Dragon Alley to the bottom of the runout of the chutes on Dragon's Back. Transition to booting and climb up Dragon's Back via Back #2. At the top of Dragon's back, boot then skin to the top of Dave's Run. 2,000 of gain over 1.2 miles.
  • The second descent is down Dave's Run to the bottom of Avy 2. Descend Dave's Run to Roma's Road to Solitude, across the bottom of Sunset, past the top of 16 onto Downhill and stop at the bottom of Avy 2. 1,490 feet of loss over 1.1 miles.
  • The third ascent is from the bottom of Avy 2 to the top of chair 22. Briefly skin up the Two/Three Bowl, transition to booting then ascend Avy 2. 660 feet of gain over .2 miles.
  • The third descent is from top of chair 22 to the finish at Canyon Lodge. Descend Grizzly Ridge to the top of chair 8 to Swell to Gopher Trail to Round Robin to School Yard to the finish.

 

Short Course

2,700 gain and loss over 5 miles

  • The first climb is from Canyon Lodge to the top of Chair 10. From the starting line ascend Round Robin to Avalanche, across Sunset to Solitude. Bend left toward the top of chair 10. 1,682 feet of gain over 1.5 miles.
  • The first descent is from the top of Chair 10 to the bottom of Holiday. The descent begins down The Canyon Connector then picks up Haven't the Foggiest. Bend right with Haven't the Foggiest, take a hard right onto Holiday, follow Holiday to where Holiday ends at the bottom of Gold Hill. 1,157 feet of descent over .9 miles.
  • The second ascent is from the bottom of Gold Hill to the top of Chair 22. Ascend Goldhill to Quicksilver to Relief to the top of chair 22. 1,217 feet of gain over 1.1 miles.

The second descent is from top of chair 22 to the finish at Canyon Lodge. Descend Grizzly Ridge to the top of chair 8, to Swell to Gopher Trail to Round Robin to School Yard to the finish.

Refunds & Cancellations

A full refund, minus Active.com processing fees, will be provided until 24 hours before the event. No refunds will be available after 7:30 am on Friday, April 18th. You do NOT need to purchase the Active.com Refund add-on, Mammoth Mountain will honor the above refund policy and below cancellation policy. 

If the event is cancelled for weather or any other reason, full refunds will be honored. In the event of inclement weather, delays may occur. Event Organizers will share method for day-of communication in the event of delays.
