About Dr. Rachel Turk
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Virginia and an authorized PSYPACT provider, which allows me to practice in 40 states. I currently work full time for the University of Richmond as their Staff Psychologist for Athletics and have been in that position since August, 2019. I received my Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology from Radford University and completed my pre-doctoral internship at Appalachian State University. Throughout my doctoral training, I focused my work and research on folx surviving trauma and during my doctoral internship I had the opportunity to specialize in working with folx with eating concerns, eating disorders, and body image issues, individuals that have survived trauma, and student-athletes.
As a former collegiate student-athlete, I understand the unique difficulties and stressors that comes along with being a student-athlete and the impact that can have on performance and overall well-being. I have always been interested in the intersection between athletics and mental performance and have been able to hone in my skills through my work with D1 college athletes over the past several years. Through my work, I have come to realize that there is a significant gap in services to student-athletes and a need for increased education and training for coaches, staff, parents, and student-athletes. My goal is to decrease stigma around student-athlete mental health, raise awareness, provide education, and highlight the importance of mental performance.
In my spare time, I continue to play competitive volleyball weekly and enjoy staying active with outdoor activities and exercise. My husband and I stay busy with traveling and now training our new puppy, Maple. I also love to cook, read, and spend time with friends and family. I am originally from Southwest Virginia and truly love the mountains, but I currently reside in Richmond, VA and have enjoyed exploring the city and all it has to offer.
