Event Description
Incorporated in the State of Michigan in 1988, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development is a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering globally and supporting individuals and their communities in their efforts to become more self-sufficient.
Join us on October 12th, 2024 for our first annual 5/10 K at Rouge Park in Detroit, Michigan to help raise money for the Safe Water Project in Somalia!
The Safe Water Project
According to UNICEF research, only a third of Somali families have access to clean drinking water. Since 1997, Mercy-USA has played a vital role in providing safe drinking water in Somalia, digging and repairing over 800 wells. Communities with a combined population of over 750,000 persons are benefiting from this safe water program.
Somalia is said to be the “second most climate-vulnerable country in the world.” Extreme weather, including successive droughts and floods exacerbated by sporadic armed conflict has created a perfect storm of suffering. Mercy-USA has been working in Somalia providing clean water and sanitation, healthcare, education projects, food aid, emergency relief, and seasonal food aid for more than 30 years.
Well construction, conducted by Mercy-USA with funds provided by private donations, has changed the lives of tens of thousands in Somalia. A nearby well gives time and safety to women and gives their daughters the same opportunity existing for education that their sons enjoy.
